Byebye Pitbulls?
On May 14th, a legislative committee at the State House held a hearing to determine what actions, if any, should be taken to try and quell the recent pitbull attacks throughout the state.  Part of the controversy seems to lie in the fact the term "pitbull" covers a vast array of dogs, ironically including the Boston Terrier, the state dog.  Some solutions that have been discussed are mandatory neutering/spaying for all pitbulls, increasing fines and limiting number of pitbulls per household.

Dr. Dodman, a veterinary expert from Tufts University, testified at the hearing stating that most vicious pit-bulls are a result of poor breeding and are males that have not been neutered.  As of now, no legislation has yet been filed banning pitbulls.

Boston's First Officially Sanctioned Off-Leash Dog Park to Open in July
The Friends of Peter's Park has  announced the opening of the city's first officially sanctioned dog park.  The now official "Dog Recreational Space" is on Washington Street at the intersection of East Berkley Street in the South End.  The project, which was completely funded by private donations, has already raised $130,000.  The Friends of Peter's Park, the volunteer organization that has led this remarkable effort are still in the process of raising funds for the renovations.  With a goal of $250,000, they are planning several fundraising efforts in the upcoming months.

"We hope that our success at making it through the DRS process will encourage other groups to be willing to undertake the process of creating DRS's in their neighborhoods," says Jen, a volunteer from FoPP. "We're happy to help other groups get through the process, and will work with the City to try and make it easier for everyone."
